Shout out to Sacha Vee – a unique New Zealand artist (of Dutch/ West African heritage) currently making waves on the international music scene. Currently based in Amsterdam, her classic, neo-soul vocals has been likened to that of Adele, Alice Russell and Erykah Badu.

Discovered at the age of 16, she was awarded “Best Vocalist” at the National Jazz Festival, and since then, has been making her presence known by performing at some of the best music festivals nationwide. She has opened for Hollie Smith, Shapeshifter & Tahuna Breaks, and collaborated with Benny Tones on “Chrysalis“, Pacific Heights on “Ain’t Gotta Hold Over Me” and most recently with State of Mind on “Three Dimensions“. She recently appeared on the “The Voice of Holland“, which is watched by 3.5 million viewers each week.

Brilliant – gotta support our fellow New Zealanders doing well overseas!

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/2012/05/serpentine-gallery-pavilion-2012-by-herzog-de-meuron-and-ai-weiwei.html http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/2012/05/serpentine-gallery-pavilion-2012-by-herzog-de-meuron-and-ai-weiwei.html#comments Thu, 10 May 2012 22:02:06 +0000 Cassius Eyewear http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/?p=26067

London’s Serpentine Gallery has announced that its 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion will be designed by architects, Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei. It will be the twelfth commission in the gallery’s annual series, the world’s first and most ambitious architectural programme of its kind.

The design team responsible for the Beijing National Stadium, comes together again in London for the Serpentine’s annual commission, being presented as part of the London 2012 Festival – the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad.

The pavilion is Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei’s first collaborative built structure in the United Kingdom.

This year’s pavilion will take visitors beneath The Serpentine Gallery’s lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous pavilions. Eleven columns characterising each past pavilion and a twelfth column representing the current structure will support a floating platform roof 1.4 metres above ground. The pavilion’s interior will be clad in cork, a sustainable building material chosen for its unique qualities and to echo the excavated earth. Taking an archaeological approach, the architects have created a design that will inspire visitors to look beneath the surface of the park as well as back in time across the ghosts of the earlier structures.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion will operate as a public space and as a venue for “Park Nights“, the Gallery’s high-profile programme of public talks and events. Connecting to the archaeological focus of the pavilion design, “Park Nights” will culminate in October with the Serpentine Gallery Memory Marathon, the latest edition of the annual Serpentine Marathon series conceived by Hans Ulrich Obrist, now in its seventh year.

The 2012 pavilion has been purchased by Usha and Lakshmi N. Mittal and will enter their private collection after it closes to the public in October 2012.

Vote Barack Obama 2012 http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/2012/05/vote-barack-obama-2012.html http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/2012/05/vote-barack-obama-2012.html#comments Thu, 10 May 2012 07:07:17 +0000 Cassius Eyewear http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/?p=26052

We generally don’t weigh-in on politics or anything politically-orientated on this website. However, yesterday U.S. President, Barack Obama, became the first President in the country’s 223 year old presidential history – since 1789 – to ever speak out publicly in support marriage equality for gay and lesbian Americans, and essentially all over the world. This is unprecedented, and the world’s media and online social networks went in to a frenzy as a result.

The issue is not about “that allowing same-sex marriage would undermine the unions of men and women“, as the conservatives would would have us believe, but about simple fairness: respect for the principle of equal treatment and acknowledgement of your fellow human. This is something we have always endorsed and supported.

Under the immense pressure of 3 billion Americans and the world’s media, President Obama showed great courage, strength and true leadership in his actions. Our respect for him has never been greater and he has proven again that he is a symbol of hope and progress for – not just some Americans – but all Americans.

So America, on the 6th November, make sure you’ve registered to vote and stand with him.

09/05/12 – President Obama sent this message to supporters today:

Today, I was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer:

I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

I hope you’ll take a moment to watch the conversation, consider it, and weigh in yourself on behalf of marriage equality.

I’ve always believed that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally. I was reluctant to use the term marriage because of the very powerful traditions it evokes. And I thought civil union laws that conferred legal rights upon gay and lesbian couples were a solution.

But over the course of several years I’ve talked to friends and family about this. I’ve thought about members of my staff in long-term, committed, same-sex relationships who are raising kids together. Through our efforts to end the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, I’ve gotten to know some of the gay and lesbian troops who are serving our country with honor and distinction.

What I’ve come to realize is that for loving, same-sex couples, the denial of marriage equality means that, in their eyes and the eyes of their children, they are still considered less than full citizens.

Even at my own dinner table, when I look at Sasha and Malia, who have friends whose parents are same-sex couples, I know it wouldn’t dawn on them that their friends’ parents should be treated differently.

So I decided it was time to affirm my personal belief that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

I respect the beliefs of others, and the right of religious institutions to act in accordance with their own doctrines. But I believe that in the eyes of the law, all Americans should be treated equally. And where states enact same-sex marriage, no federal act should invalidate them.

If you agree, you can stand up with me here.

Thank you,

Barack

Hell yeah Apple HDTV http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/2012/05/hell-yeah-apple-hdtv.html http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/2012/05/hell-yeah-apple-hdtv.html#comments Wed, 09 May 2012 19:24:58 +0000 Cassius Eyewear http://cassiuseyewear.com/blog/?p=26047

Initial reports from Cult of Mac indicate a source who has seen the long-awaited Apple HDTV that people have been pining for. Supposedly designed to look like their LED-backlit Cinema Displays, it has a built-in iSight camera for FaceTime video conference calls – with facial recognition and the ability to zoom into the user’s face and follow them as they walk around the room – as well as Siri’s trusty assistance. For comment, Cult of Mac reached out to TV analyst, Paul Gagnon, Director of North American TV Research for NPD DisplaySearch, who said he didn’t have any hard information, but expects Apple to introduce a line of TVs this year. There will likely be two to four models ranging from 40-inches to 60-inches – with a suspected retail price of between US$1,000-$2,000.

We can’t wait for Apple HDTV!
