Brooklyn band MGMT (Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden) arrived in Auckland yesterday morning for the New Zealand leg of their international tour. Their 3 Auckland show dates are, and have been for a while, completely sold out.
Not quite sure where they are staying but by all accounts I’m assuming it’s Sky City Grand, where Lady GaGa stayed when she was also in Auckland to perform earlier this year.
If you didn’t already know, MGMT will DJ at an all-ages fundraising night for iconic Kiwi musician, Chris Knox, who suffered a stroke last month. Knox and his reformed band, The Tall Dwarfs, were scheduled to open for MGMT at The Powerstation this week but Knox suffered a stroke on June 11, and will be unable to perform. After two weeks in hospital, latest reports said he had returned home to re-learn skills that have been impaired by the stroke.
If you missed out on the concert, MGMT will DJ at the Toto Bacco Room tonight. Tickets cost $20 (a bargain!, but bear in mind it’s a DJ set and they won’t be performing) and all proceeds will go towards Knox’s recovery. Too cool..
